Anthony Radford Strutt, son of George Benson, was a mechanical engineer and involved in running the cotton mills. He built Makeney Hall as his home, served as a magistrate and a Deputy Lieutenant of Derbyshire. He was reputed to have been the largest shareholder in England. He did not marry, and left his home and a proportion of his estate to his adopted daughter Anne Taylor.
