Loverock’s drapers in 1897. The business stood on the Market Place for over 80 years, closing in the 1930s. Behind, to the left, is the Blue Bell Inn (now Monki Do Tattooist).

There were several drapers in the Market Place but Loverocks was one of the longest lasting – George Loverock had opened the shop by 1846, and it had closed by 1935. This photograph was taken in 1897 when the block of buildings, including the Black Swan behind Loverocks, were sold off – the sale didn’t impact on the tenants.

On the left, beyond Loverocks, is the Blue Bell Inn. The Blue Bell closed in 1918, after several years of challenges to remove its license, as it was one of six or more licensed premises within 100 yards of each other.
